Program Policies
The National Student Exhange has established basic policies which apply to all member campuses. Within these policies, each campus determines its own working parameters and procedures for the program. Some important NCSU policies and considerations are described below.
NC State University NSE Policies:
- NSE exchange participants must be undergraduates, enrolled full time the semester before the exchange and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
- Exchanges to campuses utilizing a semester system (rather than quarter system) are encouraged.
- NC State University participates in exchanges with all the campuses listed in the Directory except campuses in North Carolina and Canada.
- One of NC State University's graduation requirements is that 30 of the last 45 credit hours must be taken at NC State University. Therefore, it is usually possible for a senior to exchange for one semester unless an individual college has additional requirements. Please check with your advisor regarding graduation requirements.
- Credit hours earned during the exchange do transfer back to NC State University but grades do not. Grades earned during the exchange will not be factored into your NC State University GPA. (Please note that your exchange transcript may be requested for graduate school or by future employers.)
- Students must check with financial aid and other funding sources regarding financial questions and awards. Some forms of aid may be portable during your exchange while others are not.
- Students are encouraged to continue applying for all departmental scholarships and related awards during the application process.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Language Proficiency
Please note that the language of instruction at all NSE campuses in Puerto Rico is Spanish. Students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions, do written work, and take examinations in Spanish. If you are planning to exchange to Puerto Rico, you must demonstrate your Spanish language proficiency as part of the application process. Please contact the NSE office at 515-2353 for additional information.
Special Needs
If you have a physical condition for which accessible, on-campus housing or classroom accommodation might be needed; a documented disability which may require academic accommodation (e.g., note takers, taped texts); a medical condition which might require immediate attention during exchange; or a condition which might affect emotional or mental well-being during exchange, you are encouraged to identify your needs by attaching a separate page to your application, indicating the nature and extend of your circumstances and arrangements which are currently being made for you at NC State. You should also indicate whether or not we may contact your requested host campuses.
NSE does not discriminate on the basis of special needs. Rather, your disclosure at the time of application is invited so that we may assist you in identifying a placement site that can provide reasonable accommodation of your needs. Following placement, it is your responsibility to consult your host campus coordinator and ADA officer to determine the deadlines by which you must submit written, current, and professionally documented information as required by your host campus.
Program Access
Not all academic programs at NSE member colleges and universities are available to NSE students. Also, some programs which are available may be highly competitive, limited at upper-division levels, or restricted in other ways. For more information on closed, limited and restricted courses and programs, look at the campus narratives in the NSE Directory of Exchange Opportunities, or online at www.nse.org.
Please note that even though a program or major is listed as offered by a member university, it does not mean that all courses are offered every term or every year. Registration in courses is based on availability and cannot be guaranteed. You must also meet course pre-requisites and/or co-requisites as required by your host campus. A flexible academic program is a must! If you are dependent upon a specific course or courses in order to maintain your academic progress, you are advised to remain at NCSU.
