Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can exchange? NSE exchange participants must be undergraduates, enrolled full time the semester before the exchange and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  2. Can a senior exchange? One of NC State University's graduation requirements is that 30 of the last 45 credit hours must be taken at NC State University. Therefore, it is usually possible for a senior to exchange for one semester unless an individual college has additional requirements. Please check with your advisor regarding graduation requirements.
  3. What are the NSE member campuses? You can view the list of NSE member campuses online at http://www.nse.org/.
  4. Can I exchange at any of the NSE member campuses? NC State University participates in exchanges with all the campuses listed in the Directory except campuses in North Carolina, Canada and those campuses utilizing a quarter (rather than a semester) system.
  5. Do grades earned during exchange transfer back to NCSU? Credit hours earned during the exchange do transfer back to NC State University but grades do not. Grades earned during the exchange will not be factored into your NC State University GPA.
  6. How long can I exchange? Your eligible time for exchange may include exchange to more than one NSE campus, may cross two or more calendar years, or may involve exchange from more than one home institution. No matter the mix of home campuses, host campuses or time away, you may only participate in the exchange for a cumulative total of time not to exceed one calendar year, defined as an academic year and a summer session.
  7. Can I apply to exchange in the coming year after the March placement conference? Yes, we will assist students with post-conference placements. Availability varies greatly among member campuses. Please email nse_program@ncsu.edu to inquire about the possibility of exchange.
  8. Do I need health insurance? NSE does not require and does not provide health insurance for exchange students. It is your responsibility, therefore, to ensure that you are adequately covered by health insurance and other insurance for the period and place of your exchange including travel between your home and host institutions. Some NSE member campuses will require proof that you have adequate health insurance, and a few will require that you purchase their health insurance regardless of whatever policy of your own may be in effect.
