Before donating:
get a good night's sleep
drink plenty of fluids in the 24 hours before donating
eat a good meal one to four hours before donating and don't skip
breakfast
become familiar with the donation process before going to the blood
drive
At the blood drive:
bring to the blood drive a picture ID and a list of any medications
you are taking
answer some questions about health and lifestyle choices
receive a mini-physical: blood pressure, temperature, pulse and
iron level
RELAX while your arm is cleaned with antiseptic. A new, sterile,
disposable needle will be inserted into the arm by a trained phlebotomist.
tell the phlebotomist immediately if you have any odd feelingslightheadedness,
hot or cold sensations, fatigue or pain.
After donating:
sit and enjoy refreshments for a few minutes
drink plenty of fluids
avoid heavy lifting for 5 hours
leave arm bandage on for 3 to 5 hours
don't skip meals!
