Pathways Leadership Development Program
What is Pathways?
Based on Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner’s leadership principle: “Leadership development is self-development,” Pathways is a 10 month program designed for high performing individuals to enhance their interpersonal effectiveness. The Pathways program guides participant’s through a self-discovery process to enable them to enhance their leadership propensity. Through this self-discovery process, participants will gain an understanding of “what they value, what inspires them, what challenges them, what gives them power and competence, and what encourages them. When they discover those things about themselves, they’ll know what it takes to lead those qualities out of others.” Through the program year, participants will complete a series ofcourses, identify and lead a project for their unit or department, and participate on a team project with other Pathways participants. These program components align with Kouzes' and Posners’, “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” as discussed in their book, The Leadership Challenge. Based on 25 years of research and data from over three million leaders, Kouzes and Posner identified that extraordinary leaders, whether in formal or informal positions, demonstrate the following five practices:
- Modeling the Way
- Inspiring a Shared Vision
- Challenging the Process
- Enabling Others to Act
- Encouraging the Heart
Participants will study and apply these leadership practices by completing the following requirements:
- Participating in a 360-degree feedback assessment to identify key leadership behaviors.
- Collaborating with supervisor and Pathways Advisor to determine leadership behavior development goals.
- Developing a Pathways Individual Project which links individual leadership development needs to organizational needs.
- Completing fourteen leadership development courses aligned with the five leadership practices.
- Partnering with other participants on a Team Project and Team Presentation.
- Capturing the Pathways experience through an Achievement Report and Presentation to demonstrate leadership accomplishments.

“I would recommend Pathways to other employees. It is a great way to learn many work-related skills that can be put to use in the work force. It gave me the confidence in myself to be a better person/employee. The skills we learned throughout the year helped me to develop and grow in my career here at NC State. I was also able to put the skills to use with my family and personal life as well. Also, while attending the Pathways Program, I was able to network and meet many people from other colleges on campus. It is a wonderful program and I'm glad I was able to attend.”
Kristen Churchill, Environmental Health and Safety/Finance & Business
“I would have to say the 'Inspiring A Shared Vision' impacted me the most. Creating my own personal vision/goals provided a guiding tool to stay focused on how I am to serve others in a positive environment. The Pathways Program allowed me to gain new friends, Giving and Receiving Feedback Skill and a great book, The Leadership Challenge.”
