Post Doc Health Insurance

Eligibility and Effective Dates

Health insurance is offered to all EPA employees of NC State with a title of Research/ Teaching Associate (Post-doc) or Intern/Resident (Post Doc) through the Post Doc Medical Plan. To be covered under this health benefit plan, you must be on an active, paid Post Doc assignment.

Dependents may be covered under this health benefit plan as long as the Post-Doc employee participates; however, dependent premiums are not payroll-deducted and must be paid by bank draft directly to the Plan Administrator: Hill, Chesson & Woody.

Coverage begins on the first of the next month following your hire date as a Post Doc. For example, if your hire date is February 1, the effective date of medical coverage is March 1. If the hire date is February 24, the coverage is effective March 1. Post-doc employees must enroll in the plan; coverage is not automatic.

If your Post Doc employment terminates on the first day of the month, your medical insurance stops on that day unless you are being hired into a benefits-eligible SPA or EPA position at NC State. In this case your Post Doc coverage continues until the end of the month. If your Post Doc employment ends after the first day of the month (2-31st), your medical insurance will continue through the end of that month then stops. For example, if you terminate on July 3, your medical coverage ends July 31. Your dependent coverage (if purchased) ends when your coverage terminates.

Pre-Existing Conditions

All new Post-Doc employees and covered dependents must satisfy a 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or received within the 6 (six) months immediately preceding the coverage enrollment date. The waiting period for pre-existing conditions will be reduced by the amount of time spent on prior creditable coverage if terminated within 63 days of the Post Doc health insurance plan enrollment date.

A member's guide, The Blue Book, and membership cards will be mailed to the enrolled employee's home address from Blue CrossBlue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) approximately 6 weeks after plan enrollment. The Blue Book provides important information on health benefits and should be retained for reference. A Summary of Benefits can also be obtained by contacting Hill, Chesson and Woody.

Enrollment Process

Complete the Post Doc Medical Coverage Enrollment form and return it to the Benefits Office within 30 days of your employment date.

The Post-Doc health insurance plan annual enrollment period is during the month of July and is typically when changes can be made to the employee's coverage.

During the plan year, if a qualifying event occurs (birth, marriage, etc.), changes can be made provided the change occurs within 30 days of the date of the qualifying event
