Marriage
Marriage, a qualifying status change creates a 30-day window of opportunity during which many benefit plan changes can be made without waiting for annual enrollment.
Benefits Changes
Benefit plan changes including the addition of your spouse to health, dental, vision, life etc. and adjustments to flexible spending account contributions must be made within 30 days of the event date. Other changes such as increasing life insurance may require statement of health approval. Change forms are available in the Forms section of our web site. NCFlex changes are made online, through the NCFlex On-Line system. Contact your Benefits Consultant for information, answers and instructions for making changes. A dependent who becomes ineligible through a change in status (reasons include divorce or marriage, etc.) must be reported by the employee to the BENEFITS OFFICE within 30 days of the event. If a dependent is not removed from the State Health Plan within 30 days of the change in status, the employee will not be reimbursed for any premiums paid after that month. Also, because the dependent was ineligible for SHP coverage, any claims paid after eligibility expired will be the responsibility of the employee.
Beneficiary Changes
Whether this is your first marriage or you've been through a previous divorce, now is the time to update your beneficiaries. Updating life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment and retirement plan beneficiaries in a timely manner will bring you and your spouse peace of mind. Beneficiary change forms are available in the Forms section of our web site and your Benefits Consultant will be able to assist with questions or instructions.
