What You Need to Know About the Flu

Seasonal Flu

  • Seasonal flu (Influenza A & B) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses
  • In the US, seasonal flu causes epidemics almost every winter
  • More than 200,000 related hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths occur each year
  • Seasonal flu can cause enormous health care expenses and lost work time
  • People over age 65 and children less than age 5, pregnant women and those with chronic medical conditions are considered at higher risk for seasonal flu complications
  • You can protect yourself against seasonal flu by registering for one of the many flu clinics that will be held across campus (register below)

H1N1 Flu

  • H1N1(previously referred to as “swine flu”) is NOT the same as seasonal flu
  • The seasonal flu vaccine is NOT expected to protect against H1N1
  • H1N1 is a new influenza virus, first detected in the US, in April 2009
  • The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is studying medical histories of individuals infected with H1N1 to determine risk and levels of severity
  • The CDC is currently working with vaccine manufacturers to produce an H1N1 vaccine
  • If or once a vaccine is available, additional flu shot clinics designed specifically for the H1N1 vaccination will most likely be scheduled on  campus

Vaccination Clinics for the Seasonal Flu Scheduled on Campus

State Health Plan (SHP) is offering free seasonal flu vaccinations to subscribers, dependents and retirees of the State Health Plan and all other BCBS/NC administered plans.

Children must be at least age 9, and those between the ages of 9 and 17 must have a parent/guardian present.

The seasonal flu vaccination is available for $30, to those not covered by the State Health Plan or other BCBS/NC plan.  The contracted flu shot provider will accept cash, checks and Medicare Part B (no co-pay required).

To help ensure we have enough resources on hand for each clinic, please let us know when you plan to receive your seasonal flu vaccination.  Then, simply present your SHP, BCBS/NC or Medicare ID card and a photo ID when you visit the clinic.
