Preparing the ProfessoriateProgram Overview & Application Guidelines
|
The PTP program is only open to PhD students. If you are a master's degree student looking for a program to enhance your teaching experience, read about the CoAT program that is offered out of the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. Visit http://www.ncsu.edu/fctl
Examples of articles on teaching that have been produced as the result of Preparing the Professoriate include:
D.B. Kaufman, R.M. Felder, and H. Fuller, “Accounting for Individual Effort in Cooperative Learning Teams,” J. Engr. Education, 89(2), 133–140 (2000). <http://www.ncsu.edu/felder-public/Papers/Kaufmanpap.pdf>
A.M. Roskowski, R.M. Felder, and L. Bullard, “Student Use (and Non-Use) of Instructional Technology,” J. SMET Education, 2, 41–45 (2002). <http://www.ncsu.edu/felder-public/Papers/Roskowski(JSMET).pdf>
You must be a PhD student to participate in the program.
The prospective Faculty Mentor and Teaching Associate should develop a plan for a significant teaching experience which encompasses two (2) semesters (preferably in the same academic year), including an observation semester and a teaching semester.
You cannot teach a graduate level course. It is university policy that you must be a member of the graduate faculty to teach at the graduate level. You must therefore teach or co-teach at the undergraduate level.
A brief overview of the mentoring plan should be written on the application form.
Include curricula vitae for both the mentor and student. The curricula vitae for mentors should be a maximum of two pages highlighting selected teaching activities.
The student must include a photocopy of his/her transcript in the application.
Both the prospective Faculty Mentor and Teaching Associate should sign the application and submit it to Dr. Melissa Bostrom, Coordinator of Graduate Teaching Programs, The Graduate School, Box 7102, NCSU Campus. Telephone: 515-2293.
If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this program, please contact Dr. Melissa Bostrom in the Graduate School, at telephone: 515-2293, during business hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to discuss accommodations.
