State Grant funds for North Carolina Residents

All students who are NC residents are considered for state grant eligibility when they complete the FAFSA. The determination of eligibility is made by the state based on various guidelines for the different state grant programs.

  • EARN was established by the 2007 North Carolina General Assembly to provide grants to eligible needy students to enable them to obtain an education beyond the high school level at community colleges and public universities in North Carolina without incurring student loans during the first two years of their postsecondary education.
  • ELS The North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (ELS) was created by the 2005 General Assembly to provide financial assistance to needy North Carolina resident students attending eligible colleges and universities located within the state of North Carolina.
  • UNC Need Based Grants are available for eligible students attending one of the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina.
  • NC Student Incentive Grants are funded partially through federal funds and partially through state funds and are provided to students with significant financial need.

Not a North Carolina resident? Some state programs offer funding even to students attending colleges outside their home state.
