GRADUATE STUDENTS

Graduate students may apply for Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and for Federal Work-Study employment.  Qualified graduate students pursuing masters or doctoral degrees may also apply for fellowships, assistantships and other awards offered through individual colleges and the Graduate School.   Apply through the Dean’s Office in your college or department before January 15.   Graduate fellowships, grants, tuition benefits, tuition waivers, or health benefits must count as resources for students who apply for financial aid.  Therefore, federal loan and work eligibility may be reduced if graduate benefits are received.  Contact the Graduate School (http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/grad) or your particular graduate department for more information about graduate aid.

Graduate students are not eligible for federal and institutional need-based grants, with the exception of the Academic Enhancement Grant.  If you apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate need according to the federal need analysis formula, you will automatically be considered for an Academic Enhancement Grant of up to $400 for the year in addition to Federal Stafford Loan support. The actual amount of your Academic Enhancement Grant will vary depending upon 1) your level of financial need, 2) the timing of when you submitted your FAFSA, and 3) whether you will be full-time, three-quarter time, half-time or less than half-time for tuition purposes. This grant is intended to cover a tuition surcharge all NC State students must pay. If you receive funding from another source that pays your tuition (such as the GSSP), you will not be eligible for this grant.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION STUDENTS

Students enrolled in the Cooperative Education program pay a registration fee that enables them to maintain student status and participate in student activities and services that are normally associated with being enrolled at the university.  Since co-op work does not carry academic credit, cooperative education students are not eligible for financial aid while on work assignments unless enrolled in other courses for academic credit of at least six (6) hours per semester.  For more information, visit the NCSU Co-op Homepage at http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/co-op_ed.

VETERANS

Veterans’ assistance programs are coordinated by the Veterans’ Specialist located in the Office of Records and Registration, 1000 Harris Hall.  Veterans’ benefits must be considered a resource in calculating your eligibility for financial aid and must be reported by you to the OFSA.  After the semester begins, and your enrollment has been confirmed, you will be required to provide a letter confirming the amount of your veterans’ benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Please see additional veterans’ benefits information at http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/va

NON-DEGREE STUDENTS

To be eligible for financial aid, students must be enrolled in a degree program offered by NC State University.  Exceptions are:

If you meet one of these non-degree exception categories, please contact your financial aid adviser in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.  To determine who your financial aid adviser is, see the staff listing.

DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENTS

Students taking distance education course work are eligible for regular financial aid consideration as long as they are enrolled in a degree program while taking such course work.  You should be aware that tuition and fee charges for distance education courses are different than those for on campus regular term course work.  This difference in costs could result in a change in your eligibility for financial aid. You should contact your financial aid adviser if you plan to enroll for Distance Education course work to see how your aid may be adjusted.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Most federal and institutional need-based aid requires U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizenship.  Students who are entering the country on student visas should contact the Office of International Services (OISSS), or visit their website at  http://www.ncsu.edu/oisss for information concerning admissions criteria and possible financial aid sources.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Financial aid cannot be transferred from one institution to another.  If you plan to transfer mid-year to NC State, you must:

1)  Contact both the NC State Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, and the financial aid office at the institution you currently attend to inform both of your intention to transfer.  Assure that NC State has a copy of your FAFSA on file, and if not, obtain instructions for having a copy of your FAFSA released to NC State.

2)  If you are receiving, or have been approved for, any Federal Family Education Loans (Federal Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford, Federal PLUS) for the year, you must notify your current institution and lender to cancel your loan at that institution.  You must then reapply for the loan for the spring at NC State.

Additional information for transfer students may be found at http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/uga/transfer.htm
