What do I do when I'm ready to retire?

  1. Schedule an appointment with your Benefits Counselor to discuss your benefits in detail.   Please thoroughly review the Continuation of Benefits section provided in the Retirement Guide.

  2. Please complete the following forms as early as 90 days prior to the effective date of retirement (the retirement effective date is always the 1st of a month):

State Retirement System (TSERS) Participants:

Shortly before your retirement date TSERS participants will receive in the mail:

  • Information on the $6,000 Contributory Death Benefit for Retired Members (usually comes first)
  • An estimate of retirement benefits
  • An Election of Benefit Form (Form 6-E) *must be signed in presence of a Notary
  • Federal and NC State Tax Form (Ret. 290)
  • Immediately complete forms and return to TSERS to avoid delays in receiving retirement benefits

Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) Participants:

ORP participants will receive in the mail:

  • Retirement information kit from ORP vendor
    (You are encouraged to contact your ORP vendor to discuss your retirement options)

  • The State Health Plan will send you a letter giving you the choice for bank draft or direct monthly payment for premiums for you dependents.
