  1. Schedule an appointment with your Benefits Counselor to discuss your benefits in detail.  Your Benefits Counselor will determine if you qualify for the Law Enforcement Officer Separation Allowance and/or the Separate Insurance Benefit Plan. Please thoroughly review the Continuation of Benefits section provided in the Retirement Guide.
  1. Please complete the following forms as early as 90 days prior to the effective date of retirement (the retirement effective date is always the 1st of a month):

Shortly before your retirement date LEORS participants will receive in the mail:

  • Information on the $6,000 Contributory Death Benefit for Retired Members (usually comes first)
  • An estimate of retirement benefits
  • An Election of Benefit Form (Form 6-E) *must be signed in presence of a Notary
  • Federal and NC State Tax Form (Ret. 290)
  • Immediately complete forms and return to State Retirement System to avoid delays in receiving retirement benefits
