SHP Health Insurance printable version

NC State University offers health insurance to permanent employees who work at least 30 hours per week (.75 FTE), and who work 9 or more months per year. Eligible employees may elect health insurance coverage in the North Carolina Teachers' and State Employees' Comprehensive Major Medical Plan (State Health Plan), which is underwritten by the State and administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield. This is a traditional indemnity plan. New employees and dependents enrolling when first eligible are not subject to a waiting period for preexisting conditions under the plan. The University pays the full cost of the premium for employees who work at least ¾ time in a permanent position; employees pay the cost of dependent coverage.

The State of North Carolina Comprehensive Major Medical Plan is commonly referred to as the State Health Plan (SHP).

Enrollment
Employees must enroll within 30 days of their hire date to avoid having any pre-existing condition exclusions applied to their coverage.

Coverage may begin the first of the month following your hire date or the first of the second month following your hire date. Employees select which month the coverage will begin. For example, a new employee hired on September 15th may begin coverage on either October 1st or November 1st. (Insurance premiums are deducted one month in advance of the coverage effective date.)

Coverage Options
Employees have three options when selecting their type of health coverage:

  • Employee Only

  • Employee Child/ Children: Coverage for an employee and any number of children (rates are the same regardless of the number of children covered).

  • Employee Family: Coverage for an employee and spouse, or coverage for an employee, spouse, and any number of children.

Health Insurance Premiums

Effective October 1, 2005, the University contributes $321.14 each month towards the total cost for all permanent employees who work at least 30 hours per week (.75 FTE), and who work 9 or more months per year.
